Bingham Academic Decathlon Team Wins State Title for Large Schools

BINGHAM HIGH SCHOOL ACADEMIC DECATHLON TEAM

Congratulations go to the Bingham High Academic Decathlon team which captured the first place trophy in the large school division of the state tournament held in St George March 5, 6, 7, 2015. With 35, 818 points the Miner decathletes beat second place Lone Peak by 1,518 points and buried third place Copper Hills by over 3,380 points. The victorious Miner team won over 53 individual medals in the 10 subject areas of the competition which, this year, centered on New Alternatives in Energy. The state championship team also took home the trophy for finishing in first place in the Super Quiz contest beating second place Park City. Park City barely edged out the Bingham decathletes for the overall championship of all schools. Tanner Harrison won the top scholar award for Bingham’s team amassing 7,147 points and won a team high 9 medals. Austin LaBonty led the Miner scholastic division with 8 medals. The top varsity scholars, were Ben Oakeson who won 5 medals and Tyler Thomas who also nabbed 5. Ben Oakeson, who tallied 4,862 points was the top varsity decathlete. Hannah White was the highest scoring alternate. The students on the Miner championship team included: Tanner Harrison, Max Heine, Skyler Knader, with alternates Hannah White and Mary Dodge in the Honors Division; Austin LaBonty, Zack Hall and Kyle Tingey in the Scholastic Division; and Ben Oakeson, Tyler Thomas, and Sena Tauteoli in the Varsity Division. The Miner Decathletes, coached by Jimmy Barton, Allison Bridge and Scott Crump, completed their 2014-2015 season with a first place finish in region in the large school division and a first place finish in the state large school division.
