Congratulations go to the Bingham High School Academic Decathlon Team for taking first place of all the large schools at the regional competition held at Westminster College last Saturday.   The Miner Decathletes scored over 34,763 points to finish ahead of second place West Jordan and third place Copper Hills in the large school division.   The Miner’s 34, 763 points was enough to place them not only in first place for the large schools, but in first place for all the teams, large, medium and small. Bingham dominated the contest by finishing nearly 5,000 points ahead of all the other schools which included Park City the reigning state champion. The top scorer for the Miners was Joel Howarth who earned 7,535 points.  He was named the top scholar for all the schools at the Westminster regional.  He was followed by Winston Hilton with 6,197 points and Jay Rollins with 6,165 points.  The top metal winner in the Scholastic category was Parker Mortensen whose point total earned him the top scholar in the Scholastic category for all schools.  In the Varsity category Austin Andersen was the top medal winner.  His 9 medal count was the highest of any on Bingham’s team.  Tanner Harrison was named one of the top alternates for the competition. Others contributing to the Miner victory were Terrell Baker, Jared McArthur, Holly Bennett, Austin LaBonty and Austen Wade.   With their win on Saturday, the Miner Decathletes qualify for the state competition which will be held in St. George on March 13th, 14th, and 15th.   Way to go Academic Decathlon Team and best of luck to all the decathletes as they prepare for state.
